Sign Language and Early Literacy
It is increasingly believed that the use of sign within education can improve the literacy levels of all children. Whilst this is a relatively new theory in child development, research so far has been positive and we at Musical Signers firmly believe that there is a place for sign language within education.
Although we would, in the future, like to see British Sign Language taught in all schools, on this occasions we are referring to simply signing keywords.
In literacy lessons, using sign language in conjunction with speech can have many benefits. It can help children when learning to read, write, spell, extend their vocabulary, retain information and express emotions. Some of our techniques can also bring a sense of calm to a previously noisy and chaotic classroom.
Signed Literacy may be of additonal benefit to a child who is bilingual or who has a hearing impairment, speech impairment or learning difficulty.
If your nursery, pre-school or school would be interested in finding out what our sessions have to offer then please get in touch with us. We are able to work directly with the children or offer staff training packages.
