What is Baby Signing?
Baby Signing is when you teach a baby or toddler simple signs (hand gestures). This allows them to communicate with you before they can talk.

What are the benefits of Baby Signing?
Baby Signing relieves frustration, reduces tantrums and encourages child-parent bonding. It helps the child to make sense of the world around them. Baby Signing can help children who are bilingual; as the signs can be used regardless of what language you are speaking in.

Does it really work?
Yes. Think about it even a newborn baby recognises its basic needs and cries when hungry or soiled. And if you can teach a six month old that it is appropriate to wave when you leave the room, then you can teach them that it is appropriate to sign milk when they are hungry.

What is the best age to start?
This depends on you, your baby and your circumstances. The optimum age is around 6-9 months because this is the youngest age that your baby is capable of signing to you. However, many parents return to work around this time and choose to attend classes earlier on. Babies generally enjoy classes from a young age (although very tiny ones may sleep through it). And parents learn enough signs to allow them to introduce it properly at home later on.

What if I have an older baby/toddler?
Some babies join classes later on. Often because parents weren’t aware of Baby Signing earlier. They can still benefit, as speech is often unclear until the child is two or three. Health Visitors and Speech & Language Therapists sometimes recommend sign language for children with a developmental delay.

Will my child still learn to talk?
Baby Signing is designed to enhance communication. Words and signs are always used in conjunction with one another. Baby Signing can help expand vocabulary and motivate your child to talk. Evidence suggests that children who Baby Sign often talk earlier than their peers.

My friend goes to Baby Signing classes elsewhere but her signs are different. How do I know if mine are right?
Some Baby Signing teachers base their signs on Makaton, although most base them on British Sign Language. Either is fine. It’s helpful to be aware that British Sign Language has regional dialects. This is similar to an accent. Some signs are different in different parts of the country. None of them are "wrong".

How do I use Baby Signing?
Baby Signing Classes are often faced paced and you will be exposed to many signs. At home it is best to concentrate on just one or two initially. Then introduce more. You can choose which signs to use first. The best advice is to choose ones that motivate your baby. "Milk" and "more" are normally quite good. But if your baby is a poor eater it may be a good idea to choose something that they are interested in.
