Note Taking

Why do D/deaf people need note takers?

Whether they are in a meeting at work or a university lecture – note takers are often essential for a D/deaf person.

A hearing person can listen to the lecturer and write at the same time. A D/deaf person cannot do this as they need to either lip read or watch somebody signing.

Note taking. That sounds easy – anyone could do that!!!

D/deaf people require specially trained note takers.

A qualified note taker for the D/deaf will understand how being D/deaf can affect a person’s understanding – in particular their understanding of the English language.

They understand the linguistic, social and cultural issues involved. They also have very neat handwriting, a good idea which words will need to be “glossarised” and are Deaf Aware. Most also have some signing skills too!

We offer:

Level two Certificate in Communication with Deaf People
Level three Certificate in Facilitating Communication with Deaf People (Note taking skills)
Level three Certificate for LSP’s Working with Deaf and Deafblind People (Note taking)
We run courses for individuals, but if you are a college we will be happy to arrange to come to you and train your staff!
N.B For both of our level three qualifications, students need to have a minimum of Grade C in GCSE English (or equivalent).
